Branch Strategy

The purpose, aims and objectives of the University of Northampton University and College Union (UCU) Branch are underpinned by its motto:

‘In unity is strength, in knowledge is power’

The purpose of our branch is straightforward yet powerful: to improve the working lives of UCU members by organising and campaigning on the issues that matter most to all staff at the University of Northampton. Together, we strive to create meaningful change and ensure that every voice is heard.

Aims

  1. To protect and promote the professional interests of members individually and collectively, regulating relations between them and the University and safeguarding their interests
  2. To ensure the branch remains an inclusive environment, welcoming members of all race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexuality, disability, nationality, religious belief, age, martial status, political belief or social class
  3. To promote the interests of University of Northampton UCU members at UCU Congress, HE Sector Conference and other appropriate forums
  4. To promote equality for all including through actions such as collective bargaining, publicity and  training
  5. To strongly oppose all forms of harassment, prejudice and unfair discrimination
  6. To transparently communicate with the membership, including listening to all concerns
  7. To champion democracy, enabling all members with opportunities to contribute to branch decision making processes and action it takes

Objectives

  1. We will always have an active campaign on issues which directly impact our members
  2. We will always be organised as if a ballot for industrial action was due
  3. We will seek to work with employers on common causes, but understand their goals do not always align with our members interests
  4. We will ensure key officer positions are filled and aim for each School to have a named representative
  5. We will ensure that our officers and representatives are appropriately trained
  6. We will ensure all new staff at UON are made aware of why they should join a trade union if not already a member
  7. We will work in solidarity with students on campaigns which advance our members interests
  8. We will ensure every member receives regular communications updating them on branch activity
  9. We will ensure every member has opportunity for their opinions to be heard and to contribute to branch decision making processes through activities including regular branch meetings, elections and surveys
